Reconnecting with Nature
Our conversation on Saturday was remarkable in a number of ways: passionate, profound, and thought-provoking, and resulting in a call for us to stay connected. There was talk of Google+ (which is not yet available to everyone),Yahoo groups, and perhaps other tools, such as a Meetup group. I want to make a request that we not limit ourselves to any one system at this point, but look for multiple platforms or media through which to deepen and expand the conversation.
In particular, I want to invite us to form a more robust, multi-faceted community, interlinked with others, and having a way to stay in touch, share ideas, collaborate, and conspire to bring about significant ecological, economic, and social change. The Sustainable Leadership Forum is, in reality, a network of leaders; a vehicle for dialogue and conversation; and an instrument for collaboration. It therefore seems a good time to inaugurate our Sustainable Leadership Network site, as a medium not only for us to communicate with each other but indeed to bring others into the discussion, and to share our own views in a larger, more open, and more public way.

(The following is a background for what we’d like to talk about at the Open House on July 9.)
As we continue to think about the role and the mission of the Sustainable Leadership Forum, it seems increasingly clear to me that, as a society, we are not moving fast enough or broadly enough to address the multiple challenges we face in the 21st century.
The most recent analysis of the evidence for this is Lester R. Brown’s World on the Edge (2011), the latest in his annual series of reports from the Earth Policy Institute. The first half book is a reasoned, thoroughly-researched, and compelling argument for recognizing that a worldwide environmental, ecological, and social collapse could occur at almost any moment. The second revisits the EPI’s prescription for preventing this, which Brown calls “Plan B” (currently in version 4.0, available free in digital format at the Institute’s web site).

Opportunities and challenges in the sustainable redevelopment of Haiti: Can we imagine an alternative future for “the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere”?
Haiti is perhaps the most powerful example of a society suffering from a deficit of triple-bottom line outcomes-ecologically, economically, and socially, though it continues to have a strong culture and an indomitable spirit. Our recent trip was both magical and disturbing, inspiring and transformative, and profoundly moving.

Haiti Today: A Sustainable Leadership Challenge
The next Sustainable Leadership Forum event will focus on Haiti and its special implications. I just spent ten days in Haiti with Matt Polsky, my colleague at the Institute for Sustainable Enterprise at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and his wife Sandy. Our goal was to do fact-finding and relationship-building on the ground, from the perspective of “the 100-year resilient reconstruction” of Haiti; and we had a remarkable series of meetings, events, and experiences in Haiti that have many lessons for us here as well. Matt and I then returned to Miami for the Sustainable Haiti Conference and I co-led our session on April 6 with Doug Cohen, co-founder of the Sustainable Haiti Coalition.

We had an interesting experience of the power of transformational leadership at our meeting on February 19, which brought more than 30 sustainability change leaders together to discuss the challenges we face as a species, and what we can do about it, both globally and locally.
I observed at the beginning that people had not come out just for an interesting discussion, from which they would go home to business as usual; and indeed a number of interesting and practical projects emerged from the conversation.

Leadership Quotes
"Nearly every man who develops an idea works it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then he gets discouraged. That's not the place to become discouraged."
(Thomas A. Edison—thanks to Regan Caton)
"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” (G.B. Shaw)
"There is the true joy of life: to be used by a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; to be thoroughly worn out before being thrown on the scrap heap; to be a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that life will not devote itself to making you happy." (G.B. Shaw)
"Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed." (Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya - thanks to Christine Comaford, Rules for Renegades)
