Member Update and Peer Networking Invitation – August 2009
Posted by Admin under: Forum .
During the month of August we are focusing on the Sustainable Leadership Forum‘s member program, on the volunteer program, and on the development of the SLF Program Investment Fund.
We are proposing to hold a membership / peer networking meeting in August, at our home in Basking Ridge, in order to discuss member projects as well as next steps for our organization; and we have also scheduled another introduction to the Transformational Leadership Course. Both of these are open to members and their guests – just please RSVP, and bring something to share if you are moved to do so.
The following are the dates of these meetings:
Wednesday, August 12, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Member/Peer Network Meeting
Tuesday, August 25, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Introduction to the Transformational Leadership for Sustainability course (to be held in September)
Please feel free to attend one or both, and bring an interested colleague. For directions, see the attached and the bottom of this article.
If you are not already a member, you are welcome to attend a member meeting, and if you would like, you can join the organization. The pricing structure ($195, or less amounts down to as little as $25, with some volunteer time) should not be a barrier to anyone, so we’re assuming that anyone who is interested will join.
The rest of this email discusses what we hope to accomplish at these meetings.
Part of what we will be discussing are one or two member initiatives, providing an opportunity for members to get input from us and other members for their projects. If you have an initiative you would like to share with the group, please provide us with a paragraph on the initiative, and preferably a brief bio and portrait photo. With your permission, we will post these to the web site, and can list your project if you are seeking additional collaborators, staff, or public involvement.
We will also be discussing our organization and its programs. For additional information please check out the latest entries at http://SustainableLeadershipForum.org. In particular, we are looking to expand the scope and frequency of our events in order to make the organization itself sustainable, and to do this we expect to rely heavily on the time that members have volunteered in lieu of paying the full membership.
The four pillars of the SLF are
the peer networking or membership program,
the courses,
the volunteer program, and
the Program Investment Fund
The Peer Networking Program
The peer networking program is designed to provide an immediate, practical service in the interests of moving member projects forward. The design of each meetng is based on practices used effectively in the Transition movement and in other groups. It both supports members’ projects and builds the enduring structures of the organization around members’ needs.
Each meeting will showcase one or more member projects, and may feature outside speakers or special content in another aspect of sustainability. We encourage you to bring guests as a way of enrolling colleagues and collaborators in an ongoing shared dialogue and experience around leadership, sustainability, and transformation.
The Transformational Leadership for Sustainability Course
Over the next month we are also planning our second Transformational Leadership for Sustainability course – using the very valuable feedback we received from participants in our initial program on July 25.
Several participants indicated that they had an extraordinarily positive experience or, in one instance, a life-changing conversation around the course, on which they are already taking action. At the same time, from our point of view the course barely scratched the surface of what’s possible. We believe that there is much more we can do in all three areas – sustainability, transformation, and leadership.
In order to offer this course, however, we need your support. For those of you who were not able to take the July 25 course, but wanted to, there will be an opportunity in September. Fort those of you who were in the July course, we’re inviting you to attend our second course free. And for all of you, we are hoping you will consider participating in the course and bringing others to it, and help accelerate yours and others’ accomplishments in bringing about a more sustainable future.
This course is, of course, only the beginning of what is a life-long quest for more sustainable practices, greater effectiveness, a broader impact, and ever-more inspired leadership in the area of sustainability.
The Volunteer Program
The volunteer program is an opportunity to work with us on the development of the organization, the development and presentation of courses, research, strategic alliances, membership development, event planning, and overall coordination. Self-directed activities that contribute to the organization are encouraged. We encourage you to get more out of your volunteer work than you put into it, and build your equity within the group in order to take on greater challenges, and have your level of contribution empower you in all of your projects and activites.
The Program Investment Fund
We’re working on several legal issues relating to the fund, just to ensure that we are operating wisely and transparently in setting up this loan fund for sustainable development projects. We’ll discuss it further at these meetings, and broaden the opportunities for participation.
Future dates and locations of programs:
Right now we are planning to hold a Transformational Leadership course every other month, alternating Sundays, Saturdays, and Fridays – so that hopefully we can make it easy for everyone to attend. Here are the dates we’re currently proposing:
Sunday, September 27
Friday, November 13
Saturday, January 23
We would like these to be at different locations. If you have a suggested location, please let us know. We will also be scheduling additional introduction sessions and member meetings, and will announce these on the web site.
Finally, we will also be communicating separately with the volunteer team, and with those members making contributions to the Fund, in order to begin making targeted investments in member projects.
