I have already made an overture to help coordinate an “unofficial plan” to counterbalance the “official plan” that will be prepared by the Government of Haiti and the official relief and development community. Whether or not the official plan will adequately include progress for people and a sustainable future and not at all clear at this time. The unofficial plan will address these matters, and be fully suited to all the communities of Haiti.

Yes, I definitely want to participate in the conversation… we are a sustainable urban agriculture project in Florida and exploring opportunities to strengthen sustainable agriculture efforts among the coalition member organizations. I wasn’t sure how to sign up for the conference call on Sunday but hope to phone in. Keep up the good work…

I would also like to participate in tomorrow’s (2/28) conference call.

I would like to make a comment about how solid waste problems could be handled on the ground in Haiti -the widespread use of biodegradable packaging (bioplastics based, not oxo-biodegradables (oxo biodegradation – petroleum based plastics with UV activated degradation catalysts)) in the relief effort & the presence of on-site industrial-level vessel contained aerobic composting units would help eleviate the massive amounts of food, possibly human waste & waste that is probably accumulating on the ground in Haiti & possibly promoting outbreaks of disease. An added bonus would be the end point production of high grade compost to be used in growing much needed crops to feed the population.

Hello – please add me to your list of participants. I am representing the Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps project, an effort of the International Association for Human Values (www.iahv.org). We are recruiting, training and supporting 100 Haitian young adults for two years of service in the reconstruction effort. The Corps will be providing psychosocial support services to adults, teens, and children, installing food security gardens at IDP camps and urban/peri-urban areas around PaP. and operating modular biogas digesters to produce biogas from human waste. I am looking forward to learning more from those on the call, and exploring opps to work together. Thank you.

Jason Brown writes:
I am a graduate student at Yale in Forestry and a founding Steering Committee member of the Yale for Haiti Collaborative. We just finished a week of education and fund raising events and are gearing up for one last push for funds before the end of the semester for shelter, sanitation and healthcare supplies.

My biggest interest in the call is understanding exactly how best to direct our upcoming efforts (funds vs. in kind drives) and what organization to partner with.

Second, I am interested in proposing an idea to the general reconstruction community: Can we proceed in a participatory manner? I think that we can easily organize through existing Haitian civil society organizations to hold needs assessment and community visioning assemblies that could be distilled into a real alternative vision for Haiti’s recnstruction, endorsed by major aid orgs and NGOs working in Haiti and then put in the hands of people like Bill Clinton who I understand is directing reconstruction efforts at the international level (and is already planning to implement the old paradigm of tourism, export agriculture and factory labor). Is this organization looking for an alternative to that vision? if so than I would like to collaborate to move forward on a participatory reconstruction of Haiti.

Third I am involved in planning long term agroforestry and reforestation efforts in Haiti with the Yale forestry school.

Attached are two example documents, and a short summary of my ideas (word doc) soon to be published somewhere as a more coherent article.

Thank you,

With a history of commitment to sustainable development efforts in Haiti, the small and medium not-for-profit, non-governmental organizations that comprise Haiti Response Coalition recognize the efficacy of their cooperative response to the emergency in Haiti. Working side-by-side with Haitian grassroots leaders, Haitian NGO & Association partners, HRC members have organized a two-tier coordinated response: (1) Mobilization of resources to respond to immediate needs and (2) Initiation of developing a sustainable recovery strategy that will reinforce the provinces and empower its Haitian partners to create a new Haiti by and for Haitians. HRC reinforces its Haitian partners through on-the-ground community organizing, networking of resources, facilitating strategic planning efforts, and advocating with and on behalf of Haitian partner.

GET THE MESSAGE TO FORMER PRESIDENT CLINTON AND BUSH THEN STAND BYE TO MOVE TONS AND TONS OF EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES, FOOD, WATER, BUILDING SUPPLIES, GENERATORS..ETC.

I may be able to dial in for the conference but in case such is not done from Tampa please review suggestions at http://www.scribd.com/ralphwhitleysr in the form of HOW TO MANUALS.

My concern would be that in March, 2010 there is an upcoming event which should guarantee HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE SHELTER should non profit groups approach ARMY NAVY STORES and L.L. BEAN plus others to receive DONATIONS OF TENTS, SPECIAL BUILDINGS, BRICKS OR BLOCKS, CONCRETE, MIXING BOXES, CB RADIO’S WITH PA SYSTEMS, SOLAR GENERATORS, SOLAR POWER ITEMS, COTS, BLANKETS, RAINCOATS, STEEL TOE BOOTS, Hammers, Nails, Sledgehammers, PROFESSIONAL FULL LENGTH WELDING GLOVES, HELMETS, GOGGLES, PAPER PRODUCTS, 55 GALLON DRUMS PLASTIC AND METAL WITH SEALABLE TOPS FOR LATRINES, SLINGS TO PICK UP THE BARRELS, BARGE FOR TAKING BARRELS TO SEA AND SALT WATER PUMPS TO WASH OUT THE BARRELS RETURNING THEM TO THE LATRINE AREAS, EXTRA STENCILS AND WHITE PAIN TO PAIN TOPS OF TENTS WITH NUMBERS AND LOCATIONS, S P O T UNITS FOR GPS VERIFICATION OF ALL TENTS, WORK AREAS, HOSPITALS, POLICE STATIONS TO ALLOW INSTANT FINDING OF THESE PLACES BY HELICOPTER IN EMERGENCY OR TO DELIVER PRODUCTS.

I see with GOOGLE EARTH hundreds of acres of bare land which could be TENTED with pallets to keep everything dry, clear plastic barrel liners for storage bags which can be sealed and one can see through same. ALL CANNED, BOTTLED GOODS should be washed with soap and salt water to get urine and fecal matter OFF OF THE TOPS OF CANS which people will snap open and drink directly from same as this can transmit Leptospirosis or various diseases when rats, cats, birds and other creatures seek protection from weather or just search for food. FLYERS and PA SYSTEM announcements must be recorded in Creole and French plus English to be transmitted to the people from Helicopters, Military and Police Vehicles day or night. Locations for FREE latrines which can be barrels with a moving latrine on wheels allowing once full two people to push same over another barrel then seal the one full to be picked up. 5 gallon buckets like from Home Depot with liners and SECURE COVERS can be used temporarily until more barrels can be brought forward.

Earth Latrines must be an option but I prefer to see barrels taken to sea PLUS the dead can be given a service on land and bodies loaded onto barges with heavy duty wood chippers to take the bodies to sea, deep to sea and chip them up pushing all over the side for FISH FOOD to save contaminating the wells or groundwater if not the water lines which are broken. Heavy amounts of CHLORINE like over 25 PPM will be required to be pumped through the existing water lines broken and rainwater filling them with bacteria. Suggestions of using NEW PLASTIC WATER LINES and SEWER LINES should be considered rather than using any steel lines or copper lines for future rebuilding.

I am extremely confident the Children of Haiti, especially those Scouts and young adults, will learn construction techniques and become the Contractors of the Future provided they are schooled in Creole and French plus English using HIGH CODES and are matched with Contractors who will teach them for the next three years of reconstruction. MOVIE groups must take professional agency films on building trades from all over the United States, translate the items by using court reporters to write the text, translate the text then DUB or provide subtitles in Creole and French but I prefer to have the films DUBBED in French or Creole then let the STUDENT VOLUNTEERS perhaps be paid a wage, given quarters in tent cities at school for construction, plus special protective clothing numbered and signed out with JUMPSUITS WITH REFLECTIVE TAPES SEWN ON SHOULDERS, BACK AND FRONT LIKE CONSTRUCTION REFLECTIVE VESTS to identify the students and instructors PLUS aid in finding them should they be in danger or working at night. As a State of Florida Certified Plumbing Contractor plus Specialist in Security and Communications ( KC4NUQ ) (Former Senior Military Police Instructor, Former TPD, Former HCSO, Former Tampa International Airport Police, Florida Security Guard Licensed) I can tell you ON THE JOB TRAINING WILL WORK SO LONG AS YOU TRANSLATE THE VIDEO AND AUDIO IS PROVIDED FOR THE PEOPLE TO STUDY —Pay and feeding plus quarters and ability to wash clothing and bodies is a must PLUS latrines and safe lighting will make people really desire to become part of the rebuilding.

PLEASE SEE THESE SUGGESTIONS REACH OUT TO ALL ON THE FORUM AND THANKS FOR GIVING ALL THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP HAITI !

Ralph: Thanks for all these detailed suggestions. Please bear in mind however that the focus of this call is on the long-term sustainable rebuilding and environmental regeneration for the people of Haiti, rather than on the kinds of immediate emergency response initiatives you outline. While it’s critical that this kind of immediate reaction be coordinated by those who know how to do this properly, we not the experts in this area, and are not part of the international teams that are working on the ground.

Our role, as we see it, is to look into the future in order to build Haiti back better than before, and not repeat the mistakes of the past, that led to poor construction and the lack of utilities and local resilience in Haiti to be able to respond to disasters like the one that occurred on January 12.

Please bear this in mind on the call. If we do not cover a lot of this it’s not because it’s not important, but because we also need to start a dialog now as the kind of sustainable development that Haitians want and need as the basis for rebuilding their country in a much better way.
